Celebrate World Ocean Day at Ellerman House

Located in the heart of Cape Town, where the slopes of the Lion’s Head meet the Atlantic Ocean, Ellerman House has a commitment to conservation of biodiversity and sustainability as important features to their immersive guest experience. Ellerman House addresses and provides ongoing practical environmental solutions to issues like plastic pollution, carbon emissions and water scarcity. The richness of plant and animal life has a special significance to the those in Cape Town; to Ellerman House, it is critical to preserve it as the loss of it affects the wellbeing of all living things.

In a conscious effort to highlight World Oceans Day 2023 and the United Nations theme “Planet Ocean, Tides are Changing”, Relais & Châteaux, in partnership with Ethic Ocean, Ellerman House will celebrate seafood “SEAsonality”. Like life on land, life in the water is punctuated by seasons. ‘In season’ refers to the spawning period which makes schools of fish easier to catch, however, this practice is not a sustainability criterion.

To protect species weakened by overfishing and climate change, Ellerman House participates in “SEAsonality” through the importance of sourcing sustainable seafood – a strict policy already in place in their kitchen. Guests are encouraged to participate in their commitment on-site through the introduction to a celebratory fish dish on the daily menu. To aid in their ongoing efforts, Chef Kieran and his team will also offer a recipe for guests to take with them in hopes of inspiring responsible provenance at home.
